Artists are an excellent, largely untapped resource
for turning trash to treasure. Who else would think to
create a whimsical elephant out of broken dolls,
mismatched blocks, globes, wheels, gnomes, and a dryer
hose (among many other bits of junk)?
On a visit to Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum last
weekend, we were delighted by two large sculptures made
entirely out of trashed toys. As I had just been on a
tour of a non-profit recycling center, I began to
reflect on the nature of “trash.” At the recycling
center, I saw large boxes filled to the brim with
forlorn-looking household items. At the museum, this
clever sculpture of an elephant.
True, we don’t need so many colorful elephant sculptures
that we can keep up with the pace of millions of
households purging themselves of unwanted items.
Yet, the promise is not in a literal duplication of this
one approach. It’s in the value-add of unlimited
creativity and whimsy brought to the overall question of
how we use and dispose of materials. Here is a
particularly sobering statistic: In the U.S., 80% of
what we buy is thrown away after six months.
Materials are part of a system and a cycle, like
everything else. As we align to this way of thinking, we
find new ways to save money, resources, and time – all
of which are foundational to greening business. Probably
the most useful first question is: do I even need this
item? Extending this mindset through to the end of a
material’s life cycle, we can even have more fun!
On another note, lately, I’ve heard from several of
you who are feeling called to participate more deeply in
the green movement through your individual work. Whether
it’s greening your own workplace or industry, or
shifting into a new career direction, the form it takes
can be elusive. There is definitely something in the
air, so I’m responding in two ways. First, I’m putting
together an exciting telesummit featuring six successful
women at the forefront of conscious leadership. (See the
Upcoming Events section below for more information.)
Second, I’m offering a limited number of Green Career
Strategy Sessions to qualified people. (See Resources
section below for details. Don’t delay! This offer
expires August 3rd.)
...until next time, remember "Let's live on the planet as if we intend to stay."
Cheers,
Julie

5 tips for sexy recycling
Many businesses embark on greening programs by taking a
good, hard look at the stream of materials both into and out
of their business. Often, this first shows up as recycling.
We all know about recycling, and how we “should” be doing
better. So, why aren’t we?.
Being trained in the design arts, I firmly believe that if
it’s not convenient or beautiful enough, people won’t
bother. Yes, beauty has a powerful, often subliminal effect
on us. If something is repugnant and hard to do - why waste
your time on it? Clear graphics and good design communicate
that recycling is an important priority. On a practical
level, engaging images and easy-to-use containers make it a
no-brainer to participate.
Inspired by a visit to San Francisco last summer, I came up
with five tips to harness the power of great design and make
your recycling program sexy. This can be applied in your
business, in organizations that you are involved with, even
in your home. We have been applying these principles in my
son’s school and at their events, with great results.

Government contractors soon required to track emissions
The General Services Administration of the U.S.
government plans to require contractors to track greenhouse
gas emissions beginning in 2011 or 2012, according to a
report in the Federal Times.
This could have a tremendous effect on a wide range of
industries and companies that rely on large government
contracts, but do not currently measure their emissions
footprint.

The work that reconnects
I’ve been reading Joanna Macy’s powerful book, “Coming Back to Life,” which represents her work over 20 years helping people to experience and embrace our interconnectedness with all of life. The book is grounded in both solid science and philosophy, to encourage the transition from our current “Industrial Growth Society” to a “Life-sustaining Society.” It is full of exercises to lead groups experientially through, for example, systems theory, despair work, creative brainstorming, overcoming obstacles, and – one of my favorites – a letter from the future.
Buy this book from Powell’s, the independent bookstore, online and in Portland, OR.
