Next week, we are headed up to Maine’s Acadia National Park, continuing our yearly visits to our great national parks. In 2008, we went to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Last year, it was Yosemite. Magnificent places, all. It’s wonderful to discover them with our son who leads a fairly typical life in a mid-size American city. Talk about contrast!
It’s hard to imagine our country without these parks. Ken Burns’ series – especially that poet-postman-ranger – brought tears to my eyes. Whether it was the visuals or the voice-overs, I always came away from those episodes with a new appreciation for the vision it took to set aside vast areas of our country just to let them be. So many stories of vision, challenge, perseverance, spiritual transcendence, industrial pressure, wrong-headedness, danger, excitement, and breathtaking beauty.
Connecting regularly with the natural world in all its splendor and power helps me recommit to my work. It’s a visceral reminder that we are part of something so much larger, older, more profound, and more lasting that we can ever be as individuals. It’s both humbling and inspiring.
As summer winds down, you might be thinking of an end-of-summer celebration with your office. Our main article is by guest writer Lynn Colwell, of
Celebrate Green
, who has a few tips for eco-friendly company parties. She and her daughter, Corey Colwell-Lipson, are co-authors of
Celebrate Green! Creating Eco-Savvy Holidays, Celebrations and Traditions for the Whole Family, available on their website.
...until next time, remember "Let's live on the planet as if we intend to stay."
Cheers,
Julie

Celebrate green at the office
As summer winds down, you might be thinking of an end-of-summer celebration with your office. Here are a few tips for eco-friendly company parties. (Many of these ideas are inexpensive too!)
• Avoid choosing paper anything unless it's treefree or
100% recycled and printed with vegetable inks.
• If you are giving gifts, make them earth-friendly. Potted
plants make great centerpieces and can be given away.
• Instead of centering the party around food and drink, come
up with some fun activities that may include poking gentle
fun at management.

Waste Neutral offers practical, affordable hauling to turn smelly food scraps into rich compost
Waste Neutral is an organics waste hauling company that collects source-separated “all food” scraps (pre- and post-consumer) waste in the Baltimore metro area. They have a simple mission. "Most people, when they think about recycling, they think about paper, plastic, glass and metals. We want to remind everyone that food waste is the forgotten recyclable resource and ironically was being recycled way before the other man made materials," says my friend Keith Losoya, founder Waste Neutral.
The full article dishes all the dirt (pun intended) on this wonderfully innovative company. Read it on my

Juice for the Journey
GOforChange.com now has a weekly feature called “Juice
for the Journey.” Each week, you can read an inspiring
quote to support you on your path as an advocate for the
earth. Each one has a brief meditation on what the quote
means to me, and a question to take into your week. This
week’s quote is:
There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm.
One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from
the grocery, and the other that heat comes from the
furnace. ~ Aldo Leopold
