Last week was full of auspicious events, starting with the Autumnal Equinox.
The very next day was not only the Harvest Moon, it was also our 21st
anniversary. According to National Geographic, this is the first time the moon
and the equinox have coincided since our 2nd anniversary, in 1991.
There is so much change in the air, as we shift into the
season of darkness. Birds and butterflies are migrating, plants are dying, and a
bumper crop of acorns is falling. It is worth taking the time to pause and
reflect, for seasonal changes affect us powerfully, both physically and
emotionally. I came down with a monster cold last week right in time for the
full moon.
Seasonal changes also remind us that change, in general,
can be very challenging. This week’s feature is about a new book on the subject:
“Switch: how to change things when change is hard,” by Dan and Chip Heath. Since
adopting a green mission requires changes both big and small in an organization,
their findings and advice are golden.
...until next time, remember "Let's live on the planet as if we intend to stay."
Go For Change
is honored and delighted to have been selected as a winner for the second annual
Baltimore SmartCEO
EcoCEO Awards, recognizing environmental excellence in business.
What has differentiated us from the rest of the pack, is we help you to unlock
the value and unleash the potential of greening your business.
This is not just a motto for us, but the way we do business.
Cheers,
Julie

7 simple secrets to “Switch” to green
Change does not come easily to us, as a species. We are hard-wired to prefer
the status quo, to drag our feet or over-analyze to the point of paralysis when
changes are proposed. Fortunately, a new book addresses this in an engaging and
enlightening manner: “Switch: how to change things when change is hard,” by Dan
and Chip Heath. I’ve pulled out seven secrets from this book to help you to
design a smooth transition to a greener business.
1. Use a metaphor to understand the three parts to effective change.
Using vivid examples, the authors illustrate the story of the rider and the
elephant. The rider is our rational brain; the elephant is our emotions. Both
are actively functioning in us; the trick is to engage them each in ways they
understand..
• The rider – avoid analysis paralysis by providing specific
instructions and direction
• The elephant – give people an emotional hook to instill hope and
motivation
• The path – change the circumstances or environment, such as by
using social pressure

Yes, it does! Market analyst Stephen reports on 5 major companies that consider environmental practices when purchasing. The article also has a brief survey to ask other companies if their purchasing decisions would be influenced by a supplier's efforts to go green.
Read his article and take the survey. Note: this survey closes Friday, 10/8, so make sure your voice is heard.
