Baltimore Aquarium Conservation Events: Chesapeake Bay Wetlands/Ecological and Societal Benefits
Wetlands throughout the Chesapeake Bay region are being damaged or lost at an alarming rate as a result of coastal development, rising sea levels, and damage from non-native species.
The Aquarium has formed partnerships with various organizations throughout the Bay region to create volunteer opportunities to restore tidal wetlands through cleanups and grass plantings.
Wetlands provide numerous benefits to the Chesapeake Bay and its surrounding watershed, including flood buffering, erosion control, bank stabilization, and water quality improvement.
Furthermore, wetlands act as refuges for birds, blue crabs, striped bass, oysters, shad, otters, and other aquatic wildlife.
